Pollinators

Pollinators consist of several different animals that collect and transport pollen from the anther (male) to the stigma (female) of flowering plants. Insect pollinators are one of the key groups that help to pollinate the majority of the 250,000+ known flowering plants on Earth. In agricultural regions, native and managed insects play a major role in pollinating crops; Over 80 of the major crops worldwide benefit from contributions by pollinators and it has been estimated that one in three bites of food humans consume is attributed to pollinators. For both wildflower communities and crops depending on insect pollination, bees, beetles, flies and other insects perform this important task. This section provides information on some of the common pest and beneficial insects that you might see in your own conservation area, whether it is pollinator habitat enhancements in your home garden or through conservation practices integrated in farm lands.
